Lost In Translation
Directed by Sofia Coppola
Ennui: "a feeling of utter weariness and discontent resulting from satiety or lack of interest or excitement" - dictionary.reference.com
A sense of ennui is what Sofia Coppola wanted to capture within Lost in Translation, and within that she captures the basis of the postmodern condition. Coppola calls it "romantic melancholy" rather than the mainstream "romantic comedy".
Coppola personifies this through the characters of Bob and Charlotte, who look for "brief moments of connection when they're feeling so disconnected." "It's about misunderstandings between people and places. It's about things being disconnected and looking for moments of connection." - Sofia Coppola "The film... evoke(s) a fragmented, dislocated, melancholic, romantic feeling. It is the memory of an enchanted few days" |
"I wanted it to be based on the way a snapshot looks..." - Sofia Coppola |
