Related Material/Texts of Own Choosing
This aspect of the course is arguably the most important, as in recent years it has been the analysis of related material that has been the distinguishing feature amongst students. This is because, generally, most students can write quite well about the prescribed texts. The sophistication of and your ability to analyse that related material to the same ability as your prescribed texts is how you achieve those top bands in the analytical response.
Your choice of related material must interest you, because ultimately it will be easier to write about and more enjoyable to read and analyse. If you enjoy writing about your related material, it shows. Makes sure your related texts are sophisticated and varied.
Remember: Your related text should enhance your understanding of the course, and demonstrate your ability to be discerning!

ETA Study Day 2012 - Extension 1 English - Navigating the Global
-- Reading List of Related Texts
As part of some introductory tasks when I first began the HSC Extension 1 Course, my teacher and I analysed the episode "Blood" from the television show Black Books, Series 2.
Below is a table where we deconstructed ideas within the text. I also wrote an essay based on that deconstruction, included below. Obviously, as the first thing I ever wrote in HSC Extension 1, it isn't a model essay. It doesn't fully grasp the concepts of the course, but it is a guide of how you can write about a related material text.
