Texts are products of particular ways of thinking present in the world at the time of their creation, and it is from here they gain significance. In a late 20th to early 21st century context, a global culture has emerged as individuals have gained the ability and opportunity to interact, exchange and navigate within this changing reality. These opportunities have resulted in a blurring of traditional concepts, and often this has lead to a sense of displacement or ennui for the individuals within this context. Many postmodern concerns and ways of thinking arising from this experience have lead a variety of composers to create texts that reveal these growing tensions. However, these texts also carry an enduring relevance as they explore the fundamental human experience within and outsider of the late 20th and early 21st century world. Lost in Translation directed by Sophia Coppola is a significant film from this period that navigates the challenges individuals face whilst still carrying a universal and relevant message of the human experience.
