The changing reality of the late 20th and early 21st century postmodern context represents individuals grappling with new ways of thinking. Composers such as Seamus Heaney, Annie Proulx and XYZ experiment with ideas and textual form as a way of navigating this change. Through language, structure, characterisation and the development of voice, these composers represent a range of responses to changing realities in their texts "Casualty", "The Strand at Lough Beg", "Funeral Rites", The Shipping News and "XYZ". As the composers and personas in these texts interact with the social, cultural, economic and philosophical paradigms of their local contexts, it is clear to see that a wider global context also influences ideas and behaviour. In this way, the texts reflect a blurring of traditional boundaries and concepts which demonstrate the difficulties of grappling with and navigating through change in this contemporary context.
Composers in the late 20th Century and early 21st Century context explore and evaluate particular cultural and social paradigms via the composition of texts. The influences of these particular ways of thinking inform the composer’s textual form and how ideas are represented through the texts. These forms and ideas are experimentations that communicate concepts within a global world, and allow composers to navigate individual responses to how blurred traditional concepts and boundaries represent a changing reality. Individuals and composers grapple with and navigate through ideas about their changing reality, which is represented via a variety of experimental ideas and forms. Annie Proulx’s The Shipping News, the poetry of Seamus Heaney and (related text) are texts that greatly reflect these notions via a variety of language forms and features.
